Make Merry or shew His death

I Corinthians 11: 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

This is a sticky issue, I know but I want to say this hoping that God's spirit would awaken some honest Christian to the truth and reality of the real issue at stake on Christmastime.

The whole world acknowledges that Dec. 25 is not the birth date of Jesus Christ, yet very few Christians take a stand. To all I want to send this reminder. The only commandment we have from God is to commemorate the Lord's death (never his birth) till he come.

I fail to see from the whole Word of God a direct, clear cut, specific commandment to "make merry" the "birthday" of Jesus.

A chilling reference to making merry and exchanging gifts is found in Rev. 11:10 And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

The reader is free to draw his/her own conclusions.
"The Two Babylons" by Alexander Hislop is an excellent addition to your Christian library.

Yes, I have read Hislop and I am re-reading it. A good book, though the final chapters on the interpretation of Revelation fall into flawed Historicist interpretation.

    Greetings in Christ,
To the exception of the only flawless book in the world (the Bible) I believe one should use judgement when reading interpretations. The book of Revelation has intrigued many throughout history and I honestly believe some of its interpretation will remain sealed till the times of the end. Remember what God told Daniel at some point? He even told John at another occasion not to write the seven thunders said. God's word continues to fascinate me.
    God bless you too.

Do you think what goes on at Christmas is what is being referred to in the revelation verse? (it says they were rejoicing over the death of the two witnesses, not "Christmas")
I agree with you, it is a lot of gobble-gook, some of this Holiday stuff, but in your individual home, it is what you make of it.

Thanks for your comment Rose. I am convinced that the selection of words and language in the Bible is God's inspired work. For the Holy Spirit to make specific reference to "making merry" and "exchanging gifts" etc, God is telling us something because these two terms strike a chord with Christmastime. Now, could it be that the time when these two witnesses would be killed in the tribulation is around christmastime. I leave it up to the reader. But there is no random coincidence in the Bible. I have studied God's word long enough that I have learnt to take every "jot and tittle" seriously.

I think we both agree that christmas was never a christian holiday. Of recent people are calling it Happy Holidays and the holiday tree and there is a lot of truth in that. Therefore I find that the description of the timing concerning the killing of these two witnesses is very telling.

    What do you think?

I highly recommend Barbara Aho's website

I hope you do not mind my posting this address.

This takes the postion that 666 refers to the name of Saturn, which is represented by the six-pointed star or 'Star of David'.

If this is the case, it would identify the Anti-Christ system with Saturnalia particularly. We do see in Christmas the uniting of pagan and Christian practise.

If Barbara Aho is correct, this would establish a possible connection with gift-giving at Christmas.

I believe that Christmas is pagan and that Christians should avoid putting up sacred groves (Xmas trees), however I think a Christian should feel at liberty to participate as conscience leads with regard to the secular elements of Christmas, such as food and gift-giving.

Gift-giving is not in itself wrong; it played a major part in ancient Near Eastern culture.

Merry making certainly played a part in the Jewish festivals. I do not think that Christmas is helpful at all and I do not consider myself to celebrate it, though I enjoy the fellowship I experience when my family celebrate it.

    Every Blessing in Christ

    Romans 14:22
Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.

Ecclesiastes 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow

Maybe you're right, and maybe after we see the prophecies unfold, we will indeed see that the choice of the Hebrew words for "merry-making" and "exchanging gifts" were secret clues about Christmas celebrations. With all due respect, I avoid reading things into the scriptures. It has, in the past, caused me to become paranoid and nervous about life "in this world." (not that I am saying anyone here is that - paranoid or nervous, don't misunderstand).

I just really try to take things at their simple meaning and not look for deeper, hidden meanings.

... but that is not saying that you may not be right! You could be - I will see in the end, as we all will.
