Careful what you pray for

The following nugget is from a sermon we heard on Times Square Church in downtown Manhattan last Sunday.

Be careful what you pray for. The bible gives us a clear example in the case of Hezekiah. I have cut and paste verses both from II Chronicles and II Kings for flow.
------------------------------------------------------

2 Kings 20:1 - In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.

II Chronicles 32:24 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

II Kings 20:5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD. 6 And I will add unto thy days fifteen years;

II chronicles 32:33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, ... And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
------------------------------------------------
What do we read immediately after that in verse one of the following chapter.
------------------------------------------------

2 Chronicles 33:1 - Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem: 2 But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen,...

6 and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil than did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel.

II chronicles 33: 6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom: also he observed times, and used enchantments, and used witchcraft, and dealt with a familiar spirit, and with wizards: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 7 And he set a carved image, the idol which he had made, in the house of God, ...9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.

II Kings 21:16 Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another; beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
King Manasseh was born to King Hezekiah during those 15 additional years.

Wouldn't it have been better if Hezekiah had just let go and accepted his lot from God's hands.

    Interesting thought.

I had never noticed it before.

Yes, that was a great message.

I had never noticed that either.

Nope....sorry...I disagree. It was part of God's plan that this should happen and it was good (just like predestination and all that other stuff). THe father was shown redemption, and through the son, Israel was shown forgiveness (later on of course). But...this all resulted from the son. HIs prayer was good, but in ways the father and Isreal did not know.

He was not in the perfect will of God. Here is the origin of the calamity.

1 Kings 20:12 At that time Berodachbaladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present unto Hezekiah: for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.
:13 And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and shewed them all the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah shewed them not.
:14 Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him, What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.
:15 And he said, What have they seen in thine house? And Hezekiah answered, All the things that are in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
:16 And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD.
:17 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
:18 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
:19 Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?

    Joe,
You always have the option to delete your own comment. Just click on the icaon at the bottom left hand side of your comment and follow the instructions from there on.

And you are right, the point I was making is that a king who caused great wickedness was born during those additional fifteen years. Manasseh did repent at the end of his life, however the damage he had done outdid all his predecessors.
